Aquarius is ruled by Uranus (Ouranos), the great primeval Godof the sky, born of Gaia, the Earth. Ouranos was imagined as the dome of the sky itself rather than as an anthropomorphic god, like his successors Kronos and Zeus. In Roman times however, Ouranos was often depicted as Aion, the god of eternal time, in the form of a man turning the zodiac wheel.

Aquarians are often recognized as social idealists and humanitarians with a reputation for being natural rebels. As if in reaction to the established Capricorn values of tradition and authority, they want to upgrade. But as the saying goes, Aquarius loves humanity but hates people. Always feeling apart, this is also a loner sign. There is a certain sense of eliteness and with it a strong ego that comes with feeling ahead of the pack and enlightened, but always with a heart towards helping and moving humanity forward.
The mythological example of this is Prometheus. He is the titan who stole fire from the gods to give to mankind because he was very concerned about raising humankind’s awareness. He was formed of clay and Athena herself breathed life into him, teaching him architecture, astronomy, mathematics, navigation and medicine. He in turn gave all these gifts to man.
Aquarius is traditionally ruled by Saturn. There is a part to this sign that is very principled and structured. The other ruler Uranus, is the genius, scientist, liberator, rebellious in their drive for freedom. The two together create a strong drive to shed any conditionings of culture which keep one from growing into their full uniqueness.
